Community Acupuncture

Building community is to the collective as spiritual practice is to the individual.”

— Grace Lee Boggs

  • The history of Community Acupuncture can be traced back to the early 1970s in New York City, with the founding of the Lincoln Acupuncture Detox Collective.

Rooted in community activism and the need for improved care, an occupation was organized at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx. Activists, including the late Dr. Mutul Shakur, the Black Panthers, and the Young Lords, created a list of demands, including a drug treatment program.

What emerged as a result of the occupation was a radical program to use acupuncture to address the needs of the community, and the first acupuncture detoxification program in America.

  • Group sessions are an easy and accessible way to receive the benefits of acupuncture, without the need for a private session.

Seating is staged in a circle using Zero-gravity reclining chairs, which offer comfort and flexibility. Points are administered on the extremities, ears, and sometimes the head. Clients also have the option to use a blanket for additional warmth. Relaxing music is played throughout the treatment, while clients enjoy a rest or nap.

  • LOAM offers Community Acupuncture at our office, as well as off-site.
